Inhalt:

In contrast to theoretical and empirical linguistics, which both are mainly concerned with the description of language as a system, applied linguistics investigates language issues in the (idealized) real world. In other words, it aims at describing social phenomena that involve language to a larger or lesser extent and, ideally, provides solutions to (or at least advice on) language-related problems of any nature.

Applied linguistics traditionally referred to aspects of second language teaching and learning, but its focus has widened considerably and it has been influenced by neighboring disciplines such as lexicography, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, translation studies or computational linguistics.

While aspects regarding language acquisition, such as developing new teaching methodologies and reliable testing mechanisms, still take center stage today, other salient subjects are the linguistically informed development of digital learning environments and further tools (for automatic grammar correction, machine translation or synthetic speech production, for instance), speech therapy, the implications of bi- and multilingualism, language attitudes, analysis of professional communication (medical language, PR language, the language of aviation, etc.), language policy and planning (including language oppression and manipulation; cf. the term "linguistic imperialism"), language loss and maintenance, as well as forensic linguistics, i.e. the analysis of linguistic evidence in crime investigations. This lecture series will establish an overview of the field by addressing a broad range of these sub-topics and will include a number of guest lectures by specialists in their respective domains.

Inhalt:

Die Lehrveranstaltung dient der Vorbereitung auf die wissenschaftliche Klausur nach LPO I §64 (3) 1b "Aufgabe aus der Sprachwissenschaft - Linguistik synchron" für das Lehramt an Gymnasien.

Auf der Basis des bayerischen Lektürekanons zur englischen Sprachwissenschaft und weiterer Texte sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse relevanter Teilbereiche (Teil A: Phonetik und Phonologie/Syntax/Text- und Stilanalyse/Lexikologie, Morphologie und Phraseologie; Teil B: Variation und Wandel) wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft werden. Es werden zentrale Texte des Lektürekanons sowie ausgewählte Aufgaben aus früheren Klausuren besprochen.

Informationen für Studierende des Bachelorstudiengangs Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft:
Die Veranstaltung kann für Studierende des Bachelorstudiengangs Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft als Seminar (6 ECTS) für das Aufbaumodul 1 Sprache und Gesellschaft eingebracht werden. In diesem Fall muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung, wie auch die FlexNow-Prüfungsanmeldung über den FlexNow-Zugang "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" erfolgen.

Inhalt:

The language of pop cultural artifacts, and especially the language of (fictional) film and television, collectively labelled "telecinematic discourse", has increasingly attracted scholarly attention on part of linguists. Researchers have recognized that telecinematic texts are an important representation of our world, potentially also impacting on social realities. In addition, it has emerged that studies of relevant texts have to account for specific production and consumption constraints. Accordingly, telecinematic discourse cannot be viewed as a poor or deteriorated version of "real" conversation, but rather represents carefully manipulated language with the aim to achieve certain comic or dramatic effects. Further, telecinematic discourse has also been studied from a more critical angle, for instance to determine whether and how gender and ethnic stereotypes are purported. All this makes pertinent textual varieties worth studying in their own right.
To deal with the aforementioned issues, this class is conceptualized as "scholarship-in-action" and will often rely on analyses of concrete telecinematic material. In passing, central linguistic terminology and research areas that have considered telecinematic discourse (e.g. pragmatics, sociolinguistics, stylistics, etc.) will be revisited and recently established linguistic resources, such as the Movie Corpus (https://www.english-corpora.org/movies/), will be introduced. Due to the nature of the artifacts studied, related topics such as multimodality and the use of telecinematic discourse as a resource in language education will also be tackled.
