Description:
"Don’t you love the Oxford Dictionary? When I first read it, I thought it was a really really long poem about everything.” (David Bowie) -- "Your sturdy reassurance is your real charm [...]. In an age where Wikipedia's universal reputation for unreliability doesn't stop anyone from using it, and where the media and politicians are more distrusted than ever, you are a beacon of light" (Chas Newkey-Burdon, "I love my dictionary", 14 February 2008; https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2008/feb/14/ilovemydictionary). What exactly is it that makes an artist discover qualities of a poem in a reference work, or a journalist ascribe to it much-loved "sturdy reassurance"? It is the great effort of dictionary writing, i.e. lexicography. Lexicography is both an art and a craft, as Sidney Landau so aptly put it in the subtitle of his monograph on dictionaries. We will explore the theoretical concepts as well as the practical possibilities and problems of cataloguing the wealth of words of the English language. The selection and presentation of material in designing a dictionary will be a special focus (e.g. alphabetical vs. topical, or a particular synchronic selection in learner's dictionaries vs. an exhaustive diachronic dictionary, e.g. in the Oxford English Dictionary). In addition, the question of the linguistic treatment behind the lexicographical presentation will take us to a discussion of definitions and translations, phonetic and graphic aids, historical explanations, and illustrations. Major landmarks in the development of English lexicography will be introduced and discussed; the main focus, however, will be modern dictionary making, both synchronic and diachronic, the use of electronic corpora for these purposes and the possibilities of electronic and/or online publications. Special consideration will be given to the greatest dictionary of all, the Oxford English Dictionary. The practical application of theoretical concepts in project work and its presentation is the foundation of the written seminar paper. An optional STUDY TRIP (EXCURSION) is offered with this seminar (see above, at "2. Registration and Deregistration", for details).
The Übung, which accompanies the Hauptseminar (Wednesday, 14:15-15:00 in U9/01.04) is designed to discuss project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Inhalt:

Bei der Wahl Ihres Themas im schriftlichen Staatsexamen in Linguistik haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an diesem Repetitorium teilnehmen, um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte sowie des Mittelenglischen (und gegebenenfalls auch des Altenglischen) zu vertiefen. In dieser Übung werden zum einen theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, zum anderen geht es um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen (und altenglischen) Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen. Kursunterlagen werden auf dem "Virtuellen Campus" bereitgestellt. Das Passwort wird zu Vorlesungsbeginn bekanntgegeben. Die mittelenglischen Klausuren bauen immer auf eine stark eingegrenzte Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers auf, speziell aus den Canterbury Tales und aus Troilus and Criseyde, woraus zunächst eine Passage zu übersetzen ist. Daher wird zusätzlich ein Intensivblockkurs Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten (0,7 SWS). Nicht-modularisiert Studierende sind für die Vorbereitung auf ihr Examen in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen, ebenso wie Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte.

Description:
Would you – as a traveller in time – be able to talk to Geoffrey Chaucer, who died 617 years ago? Would you understand his form of English, and he yours? And what about the author of Beowulf, for instance, who lived some further 400 years before Chaucer? You would certainly have many words in common, and both the author of Beowulf and you, for instance, could understand the Old English sentence He swam west in storm and wind and frost. But then he (or she?) would have to explain to you that leode means 'people' (compare German Leute) and Chaucer would be puzzled by the word and concept of the internet, for example.
For all those with exploratory spirit and interest in the earlier stages of the English language – but with no previous knowledge of them – this guided tour will prepare the ground to venture on their own paths of discovery of the forms of the language from which modern English developed. Placing the emphasis on Middle English, you will find out about similarities and differences to modern English (and also to German), regarding sounds, words, grammar and meaning. At the end of the semester, you will be able to answer the questions asked at the beginning of this description in much more detail – and you might actually be able to talk to Chaucer; given that a time machine has been invented by then. Knowledge of earlier stages of the English language are not required for participation in this course.

Inhalt:

Description: Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any – in fact only eight – inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related – as they obviously are, when we compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced, and special areas of interest are the development of sounds and spelling, grammar, vocabulary and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS).Students from other BA programmes can earn 2 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2 or 4 ungraded, pass/fail or graded ECTS points. Everybody elso who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without getting ECTS points.
Note that students of Lehramt Gymnasium and of B.A. Medieval Studies must attend the Uebung "Englische Sprachgeschichte", not this lecture.

Für Studienortwechsler, Erasmusstudenten sowie Studierende, die den Leistungsnachweis zur baldigen Prüfungsanmeldung benötigen, werden im begrenzten Umfang Plätze freigehalten. Bei Überbuchung des Seminars fällt die Entscheidung über die Teilnahme in Rücksprache mit der Dozentin.

3. Voraussetzungen für das Bestehen des Kurses:
2 ECTS (Lehramt Gymnasium: Aufbaumodul Sprachwissenschaft, BA Interdisziplinäre Mittelalterstudien/Medieval Studies: Basismodul): Test (45 Minuten)
2 ECTS (LA GS, MS: Aufbaumodul): Referat (30 Minuten)
2 ECTS (LA GS, HS, RS, B.Ed. Berufl. Bildung: Basismodul Sprachwissenschaft bei Studienbeginn vor WS 2012/13): Übungsaufgaben 2 x 15 Min. (benotet)
2 ECTS (BA Studium Generale für Nicht-Anglisten): Anwesenheit
2 ECTS (MA: Consolidation Module I): Mündliche Prüfung (30 Minuten)

Description:
Diese Lehrveranstaltung behandelt die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Lexikologie und Lexikographie, Phonologie, Morphologie und Syntax. Sie vermittelt überblicksartig Grundkenntnisse von der Geschichte der englischen Sprache macht dabei, vor dem Hintergrund der wichtigsten soziohistorischen Ereignisse, die tiefgreifenden Änderungen vom Alt- zum Neuenglischen deutlich.
