Description:

The lecture provides an overview of the many ways in which the two major national varieties of English differ. As is well-known, British and American English diverge systematically in the pronunciation and distribution of certain phonemes and allophones. Similarly well-known are differences in the spelling and vocabulary, which happen to provide a frequently discussed topic in the teaching of English. Above and beyond such phonetic/phonological, orthographic and lexical differences, recent research has shown that on the grammatical level, there is also a not-to-be-underestimated number of major and minor contrasts. These include differences in word formation, grammatical morphology, word order as well as syntactic relations.

The lecture will contextualize linguistic contrasts with a view to the historical evolution of the relationship between British and American English and pragmatic differences characterizing speakers' linguistic behaviour. It will equally aim at discovering system-inherent orientations that account for variety-specific tendencies. For this purpose, the diachronic dimension of the contrasts will be given an important place, and issues such as the myth of the colonial lag, the world-wide leadership of American English, formality and colloquialization will crop up repeatedly.

Inhalt:

This course is concerned with central aspects of phonetics and basic phonological concepts. It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress. Core readings and texts for transcription will be made available on the Virtual Campus after each session.

Description:

In this seminar we will look at English grammar and grammars of English from a variety of perspectives. From the 18th to the 20th centuries, much of English grammar writing has been prescriptive, instructing readers which grammatical structures should be used and which should be avoided because they were considered improper, corrupt, barbarous or otherwise inadvisable. We will read about how the grammar of English underwent standardization and which idealizations were adopted. Using published research and carrying out studies of our own, we will investigate the hotly debated question of which role prescriptive grammars played in the process.

This tradition was continued in the 20th century by styleguides such as Strunk's Elements of Style (1918) and Fowler's Dictionary of Modern English Usage (1926), which had considerable influence on the writing of generations of students in the US and Great Britain, respectively. More recently, the ubiquitous Microsoft grammar checker has been argued to have developed into the most powerful prescriptive language force in the world.

Modern descriptive grammars (e.g. Quirk et al. 1985 and Biber et al. 1999) have shifted the focus from prescription to description based on actual (rather than idealized) usage.

Learners' grammars, making deliberate use of simplification for didactic purposes, represent yet another type of grammar that is particularly relevant for future teachers of English.

We will contrast the accounts of syntactic phenomena given in different grammars of English with real usage as documented in large collections of texts (corpora), both historical and contemporary. Phenomena will include the following:

sentence-initial and and but
preposition stranding, e.g. the picture she was looking at
double negation, e.g. he won t do no harm
double comparison, e.g. the most happiest person
irregular past tense forms, e.g. sung, drunk, dove, snuck
split infinitives, e.g. to fully understand
which and that as relativizers
shall and will with 1st person subjects
active and passive constructions

The Übung that accompanies the seminar (Thursdays, 16:00 - 16:45; beginning in the second week of term) is designed for discussions of linguistic project work and other assignments with the teacher individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.

Inhalt:: Die Linguistische Werkstatt ist eine Vortragsreihe mit Diskussionscharakter, in der ein breites Spektrum an linguistischen Fragestellungen behandelt wird. Vorträge werden sowohl von in Bamberg tätigen also auch auswärtigen Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern gehalten; auch Promovierende können die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit vortragen und zur Diskussion stellen. Die Reihe soll vor allem ein Diskussionsforum bieten, das über die Grenzen der einzelnen Fächer hinweg unterschiedliche Ansätze und Fragestellungen innerhalb der Linguistik umfasst. Promovierende der BaGL können die regelmäßige Teilnahme an der Werkstatt als Teil ihrer Pflichtveranstaltungen anrechnen lassen.

A short note on the time slots above:
The course consists of two parts, both of which are obligatory: Four hours on Monday (dealing with academic writing in linguistics) and four hours either on Thursday or on Friday (dealing with empirical data in linguistics), with a little project work in between. Description:
The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Ergänzungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in using specific sources of information and technologies as well as in collecting, analysing and visualizing their own empirical data. The topics treated will include aspects of academic writing (handling secondary literature, referencing), the analysis of linguistic corpora and other databases, the use of online dictionaries, the construction of questionnaires, the analysis of audio-recorded data, the interpretation of experiments, etc.
