- Inhalt:
- Hardly any other city in history has allowed Jews to live as freely as New York. The seminar sets out to explain how the metropolis on the Hudson became an attraction for Jews worldwide and how multi-faceted Jewish existence in the city still is today. First following a historical trajectory, we will study how the Jewish population developed from colonial times to the present. Special attention will be paid to the German and Eastern European immigrant groups and their economic, cultural and religious differences. Individual examples, such as the textile industry, the press, shops and synagogues, will illustrate how Jews were able to leave their mark on the city. We will also learn how individual districts have played a major role in New York's Jewish history, including the Lower East Side, Washington Heights and Crown Heights. Theoretical texts, particularly from the fields of Urban and Ethnic Studies, will help us to understand the historical phenomena.

- Inhalt:
- This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.
The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

- Inhalt:
- When rioting broke out in London, Birmingham, Manchester, and other English cities in August 2011, several commentators pointed to a tradition of riots, rebellions and revolts which was frequently overlooked in official historical accounts but had influenced British culture. Following a chronological trajectory, this Proseminar sets out to understand radical oppositional movements as well as eruptions of gratuitous violence from the early modern period to the present in their respective religious, political, and cultural contexts. In order to estimate the cultural impact of these turbulences, we will not only look at the historical data, but also study literary and artistic expressions dealing with civil disobedience. Riots and rebellions studied include: The Prayer Book Rebellion (1549), The English Civil War (1642 1651), the outcry against the Jewish Naturalization Bill of 1753, the Gordon Riots (1780), the Peterloo Massacre (1819), the Suffragettes Rebellions (e.g. 1903), The Brixton Riot (1981), the 2011 England Riots, and the 2019 Extinction Rebellion protests.
