Die Veranstaltung entspricht für Studierende der Romanischen Sprachwissenschaft der obligatorischen Vorlesung (2 ECTS) für das Basismodul „Romanische Sprachwissenschaft“.

Inhalt:

This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar Introduction to Linguistics , which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

Inhalt:

This course introduces students to empirical approaches to linguistics, beginning with general principles of empirical research, then looking at research design and different methods of data collection. The course will include a short introduction to the software programme Praat, used for analysing speech data. We will also look at questionnaire design, interview and recording techniques, and using existing written sources (language corpora). Students will be expected to complete regular assignments and to undertake practical data collections on a topic of their own choice. This course will be followed by an (optional) second course (Empirical methods, II), offered in Summer 2017, which focuses on statistical methods of data analysis.

Zusammen mit dem Folgekurs Kurdisch 2 bildet dieser Kurs ein Modul für den MA-Studiengang Iranistik: Sprachpraktisches Modul (Varietäten des Neupersischen/ Komplementärsprache, Ma Ir 05, Modulgröße 10 ECTS). Dieses Modul kann als Alternative zum Fachwissenschaftlichen Modul 2 des MA-Studienganges Iranistik gewählt werden. Der Kurs kann auch für die Modulgruppe "Sprachpraxis" im BA-Nebenfach "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft", im MA "General Linguistics", im BA Islamischer Orient sowie fürs Studium Generale angerechnet werden.

Inhalt:

In this course we teach Northern Kurdish, also known as Kurmanji, which is spoken in a large region of Eastern Turkey and in the neighbouring regions of Syria, North Iraq and Iran. Estimates of the numbers of speakers range ferom 12 to 20 Million. There is now a rich selection of Kurdish-language media available as well as a number of pedagogical sources; in the course we will work with our own selection of material that will be made available to the students via the VC. The course is run by two instructors. The first is a native speaker of Northern Kurdish, from the Kurdish Region of North Iraq, who will work on developing communicative competence in Kurdish, while the other is a linguist who will explain and exemplify the relevant structures of Kurdish. The languages of instruction are Kurdish and English.

In diesem Kurs wird das Nordkurdische (auch Kurmanji genannt) unterrichtet, das in einem zusammenhängenden Gebiet im Osten der Türkei sowie angrenzenden Teilen Syriens, Nordiraks und Irans von mindestens 12 Millionen Sprechern gesprochen wird (einigen Schätzungen zu Folge liegt diese Zahl eher bei 20 Millionen). Inzwischen existiert ein großes Angebot an kurdischsprachigen Medien und Unterrichtsmaterialien. Für den Unterricht kombinieren wir diese in einer eigenen Auswahl, die den Studierenden auch über den VC zur Verfügung gestellt wird. Der Unterricht wird zum Teil durch eine Muttersprachlerin aus dem kurdischsprachigen Nordirak durchgeführt, die die aktive kommunikative Kompetenz der Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer fördert, zum Teil durch einen Linguisten, der die Strukturen des Kurdischen vermittelt. Unterrichtssprachen sind Englisch und Kurdisch.

Inhalt:

The colloquium is primarily aimed at graduate students (MA and PhD candidates) who are working on a thesis, or are developing their research questions. Students will be expected to present their work, and engage with the other participants and the lecturer in discussions of key concepts in method and theory. The first meeting will be on October 24th, when we will lay down the schedule for the term. Please contact the lecturer via email if you wish to attend, and give an indication of your research interests.

The colloquium is also open to interested linguists of all backgrounds who wish to participate in general exchange of ideas, and we may, depending on the programme, also be able to incorporate additional presentations; please check with the lecturer beforehand.

Inhalt:

Turkish is one of the main languages traditionally taught in Oriental Studies, and is among the most widely-spoken languages in Germany today. Turkish exhibits deep differences, both in vocabulary and in structure, from the more familiar languages of Western Europe, and thus presents learners initially with a number of challenges. This course presents a linguistʼs view of Turkish, focusing on those aspects where contemporary linguistics can offer insights to better understanding the structure of Turkish. The course begins with the position of Turkish within the Turkic languages, and the history of Turkish, before moving on to main features of phonology and grammar. Previous knowledge of Turkish is not a prerequisite, but a basic understanding of at least traditional grammatical terminology (verbs, nouns, subjects, predicates, postpositions) and some basic understanding of phonetics would be advantageous. The main source is Göksel and Kerslakeʼs grammar (2005), supplemented by other material that will be provided.
