Inhalt:

In this course students will have an opportunity to try out the main skills of language analysis that are introduced in the lecture Introduction to Linguistics . Students will work intensively on example sets taken from a broad range of different languages, to discuss different analyses, and to evaluate different theoretical proposals. The course closes with a written test.

Informationen für Studierende der Romanischen Sprachwissenschaft:
Die Veranstaltung entspricht für Studierende der Romanischen Sprachwissenschaft der obligatorischen Vorlesung (2 ECTS) für das Basismodul Romanische Sprachwissenschaft .
In diesem Fall muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung wie auch die FlexNow-Prüfungsanmeldung über den FlexNow-Zugang der Romanischen Sprachwissenschaft erfolgen.

Inhalt:

This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar Introduction to Linguistics , which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

Inhalt:

In the English language spoken before around 1500, it was common to negate a simple clause using the particle not, and placing it after the verb, as in: go not! For today s English speakers, however, this would sound very odd, because today, the same meaning is expressed using a negated form of do, as in: don t go! This is a simple example of syntactic change, but it raises many questions: Why should the speakers of English replace their VERB+not structure with don't+VERB? Did they do so suddenly, or gradually? What steps would have been involved? Can we relate this change to similar changes in other languages? The branch of linguistics that investigates syntactic change is diachronic, or historical, syntax. Diachronic syntax examines the ways in which the syntax of languages change over time, and develops models to account for them. In this course, we will review different kinds of syntactic change and some of the models that have been put forward to account for them, with a special emphasis on grammaticalization. We also discuss the issue of gradual versus abrupt change, and look at recent advances in corpus linguistics as a source of evidence in diachronic syntax.

Inhalt:

This course provides an overview into the main issues surrounding the concepts of pidgin and creoles. Broadly speaking, we need to consider both the particular sociocultural conditions that lead to the emergence of these two phenomena, and the kinds of linguistic forms (phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon etc.) which characterize them.

This topic is closely interrelated with other topics, in particular language change, language contact, and language acquisition, and there is a vast literature on it (see the end of this document for a selection). We will primarily use Velupillai (2015), and make reference to the online accessible Atlas of Pidgin and Creole Structures Online (Michaelis et al 2013):

Inhalt:

The colloquium is primarily aimed at graduate students (MA and PhD candidates) who are working on a thesis, or are developing their research questions. Students will be expected to present their work, and engage with the other participants and the lecturer in discussions of key concepts in method and theory. Please contact the lecturer via email if you wish to attend, and give an indication of your research interests.
The colloquium is also open to interested linguists of all backgrounds who wish to participate in general exchange of ideas, and we may, depending on the programme, also be able to incorporate additional presentations; please check with the lecturer beforehand.
