Inhalt:

Music offers a unique opportunity to better understand the organization of the human brain. Musical performance and perception are made possible by recruiting brain systems that have already developed for other purposes, i.e. there is no single “music centre” in the human brain, but the involvement of a dozen scattered networks throughout the brain. This complex system is vulnerable to various distortions and may be impaired by some brain lesions, resulting e.g. in different forms of amusia. Musical imagery may become excessive and uncontrollable leading to incessant repetition of catchy tunes (brainworms) or even musical hallucinations. Musical perception can be especially powerful and have great therapeutic potential for patients with a variety of neurological conditions (e.g. strokes, dementia, Parkinson). The Seminar will also cover the neuropsychology of a special form of synesthesia, i.e., chromesthesia (association of sounds with colours) and functional and anatomical differences that have been detected in professional musicians by modern neuroimaging methods (e.g., functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI], transcranial magnetic stimulation [TMS], or electroencephalography [EEG]). Finally, actual research is increasingly concerned with the brain basis for musical aesthetics and musical emotion.

Das Seminar gehört zum Modul Allgemeine Psychologie II. Das Seminar gehört zum Modul Lernens, Lehrens und der Entwicklung: Basismodul A (Wahlpflichtmodul) im Studiengang MSc Empirische Bildungsforschung.

Inhalt:

Die Effekte von Musik sind extrem vielfältig. Auf keine andere Art lassen sich beispielsweise Emotionen so deutlich ausdrücken wie mit Musik, aber auch extrem starke Emotionen empfinden. Musik kann uns zum Weinen bringen, beruhigen, glücklich oder ängstlich machen. Musik wird als einer der häufigsten Auslöser von Gänsehaut und damit verbundenen Phänomenen angesehen. Sind die Emotionen, die durch Musik ausgelöst werden, vergleichbar mit denen, die in gängigen Emotionstheorien diskutiert werden? Wie wird Musik zum Auslöser von Emotionen und wie man kann die emotionale Wirkung von Musik erfassen?
