Inhalt:

While Britain and the United States have contributed greatly to the promotion of liberal ideals like justice, tolerance, and equality, one should not ignore the ugly underbelly of narrow-mindedness, prejudice, and bigotry that has also existed. That anti-Semitism has proved to be one of the most enduring and baneful forms of hostility can partly be attributed to its ability to transform – “like a virus, it mutates,” as Jonathan Sacks, the former Orthodox Chief Rabbi of the UK, put it in a speech in the House of Commons in 2018.

This advanced seminar in cultural studies will look at many of the mutations of the disease from the Middle Ages until today. Christian anti-Judaism did not only decry the Jewish religion as callous and legalistic but accused its followers of blindness, stubbornness, and clannishness. Ultimately, Jews were blamed for the death of Christ. Racial forms of anti-Semitism, which developed in the course of the nineteenth century, elaborated on these ancient prejudices, hallucinating about unsavory Jewish character traits, filthy bodies, and licentious practices. The irrational character of anti-Jewish racism is nowhere better illustrated than in the grand conspiracies Jews were suspected of scheming. Drawing upon a plethora of texts and phenomena, the seminar will elucidate these elements in their historical contexts and with the help of theoretical explanations.

Inhalt:

In the Introduction to his 2022 book The Right: The Hundred-Year War for American Conservatism, Matthew Continetti relates how he asked the students in his college class on the history of American conservatism what surprised them most about the course material. One student answered: “I’m surprised that any of this exists.” The anecdote may illustrate that knowledge about this major force in the development of American culture is limited, even among American students.

Partly following Continetti’s inspiration, this advanced seminar sets out to introduce students to the ideas, institutions, and personalities that have contributed to American conservatism since World War II. Far from a stable, monolithic movement, conservatism has been subject to centrifugal forces, but there have also been phases of solidification and unification. The seminar will study influential publications, landmark events, and decisive controversies to explain the emergence of the various strands of American conservatism. Particular attention will be paid to the tension between an establishment consensus and populist impulses. We will explore how philosophical and economic ideas have affected domestic policy as well as perspectives on international relations. Apart from questions of institutional politics, a focus will be on attitudes towards social and cultural issues, from the women’s movement to sex education, from the Western canon to affirmative action, and from modern art to political correctness. The seminar is also interested in the relationship of the conservative movement to political parties (the GOP in particular) and how it became organized in think tanks, around newspapers and magazines, and on the internet.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

This course provides an overview of important approaches in the theory of culture. We will study key texts that have influenced the discipline of Cultural Studies in the Anglo-American world and beyond. Rather than being based on a lecture-style instruction, this class should be understood as a forum to discuss students positions toward the texts. A thorough preparation of the respective material is therefore imperative.
