Inhalt:

This course is concerned with central aspects of phonetics and basic phonological concepts. It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress. Core readings and texts for transcription will be made available on the Virtual Campus after each session.

Inhalt:

Die Linguistische Werkstatt ist eine Vortragsreihe mit Diskussionscharakter, in der ein breites Spektrum an linguistischen Fragestellungen behandelt wird. Vorträge werden sowohl von in Bamberg tätigen also auch auswärtigen Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern gehalten; auch Promovierende können die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit vortragen und zur Diskussion stellen. Die Reihe soll vor allem ein Diskussionsforum bieten, das über die Grenzen der einzelnen Fächer hinweg unterschiedliche Ansätze und Fragestellungen innerhalb der Linguistik umfasst. Promovierende der BaGL können die regelmäßige Teilnahme an der Werkstatt als Teil ihrer Pflichtveranstaltungen anrechnen lassen.

Der erfolgreiche Besuch der Introduction to English Linguistics wird vorausgesetzt; auch ein bestandener Kurs English Phonetics and Phonology ist sehr wünschenswert.

There is no reading week in this class.
Mainly due to several holidays, the number of core sessions will be relatively small. To compensate for this, there will be two additional formats/dates:

• One extra session will take place on Friday, 3 July, in KR12/02.05, from 10-12 am.
• Prior to presentations, I will meet the respective groups of participants not simply for a general office hour, but for a discussion of approx. 60-90 minutes. Non-presenters are invited to participate in this.

Inhalt:

This seminar focuses on the kinds of English used in Ireland. Beyond purely linguistic aspects, the topic is approached from historical, political and identity-related angles.

• We set out by discussing the historical background of the variety. For example: When and how was English established in Ireland and how did colonialism and language contact with the Irish and Scots languages influence the variety? We will gain an understanding of past and present language attitudes and policies concerning those different languages (English, Irish, Ulster Scots) and their potential consequences for the linguistic landscape of Ireland.
• We will discuss general aspects of political conflicts and developments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (e.g. the Great Famine, Home-rule movement, Easter Rising, Irish War of Independence, Anglo-Irish Treaty 1921, Irish Civil War, Republic of Ireland Act 1948, ) and their consequences for socio-political identity-building and linguistic attitudes and behaviours.
• We will discuss descriptions of some present-day Irish Englishes at all linguistic levels (phonology, morphology and syntax, lexicon). This will include discussions of the sociolinguistics and structural characteristics of some regional (including urban) varieties of Irish English, and the identities of the respective speech communities.
• In view of current political developments in the context of Brexit, we will discuss more recent lines of conflict, changing affiliations and their possible effects on (linguistic) identity construction and, consequently, language variation and change in Ireland.
