Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 3, 4 oder 6 ECTS im Rahmen eines Seminars oder einer frei wählbaren Übung in der englischen Sprachwissenschaft erforderlich sind. Bitte beachten Sie jedoch, dass das Seminar ausnahmsweise nicht zwingend für das Ergänzungsmodul geeignet ist und nicht für Masterstudierende offen ist!

In the 3rd and 4th weeks of term, we offer an introductory block familiarizing students with linguistic research methods (the Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics"): https://univis.uni-bamberg.de/prg?search=lectures&show=llong&nosubchap&id=21374102&sem=2021s&codeset=utf8. Participation in this Übung is recommended for anyone with a strong interest in Linguistics. For those BA students planning on doing their Ergänzungsmodul in Linguistics, for all students doing Lehramt Gymnasium and for all MA students, the course is obligatory at a certain point in their studies, so it is recommended to do it as early as possible. These participants are required to reserve the following times and dates: Monday, 26 April 2021, 8-10 am, Thursday, 6 May 2021, 8-10 am, and Friday, 7 May 2021, 8-11 am. Inhalt:

English came to Africa in several colonial waves, which can be seen today in the different types of English and contact varieties on the continent. In this seminar, we will look at different varieties in addition to the linguistic, historical, political and sociocultural reasons and processes for their emergence and spread. These include native varieties such as White South African English; English as a Second Language like Ghanaian English; as well as pidgins and creoles as, for example, Krio (Sierra Leone) or Nigerian Pidgin that we will analyse ourselves using corpora, films, YouTube videos, songs, or novels. Students will thus be introduced to methods and empirical research in linguistics and become familiar with models of World Englishes and the handling of sociolinguistic data.

Inhalt:

This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master s theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

Inhalt:

This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

Inhalt:

Variation and change are central properties of all languages. Thus, rather than speaking of one "English", it is more adequate to conceive of multiple "Englishes" or at least of English as a pluricentric language. This lecture series, delivered by a range of international experts, will take multiple perspectives on the guiding topic and will illustrate the many ways in which language variation and change (i) can be assessed from a scholarly perspective and (ii) have bearings on everyday language usage.

Inhalt:

Die Linguistische Werkstatt ist eine Vortragsreihe mit Diskussionscharakter, in der ein breites Spektrum an linguistischen Fragestellungen behandelt wird. Vorträge werden sowohl von in Bamberg tätigen also auch auswärtigen Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern gehalten; auch Promovierende können die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit vortragen und zur Diskussion stellen. Die Reihe soll vor allem ein Diskussionsforum bieten, das über die Grenzen der einzelnen Fächer hinweg unterschiedliche Ansätze und Fragestellungen innerhalb der Linguistik umfasst. Promovierende der BaGL können die regelmäßige Teilnahme an der Werkstatt als Teil ihrer Pflichtveranstaltungen anrechnen lassen.
