Inhalt:

In this course students will have an opportunity to try out the main skills of language analysis that are introduced in the lecture Introduction to Linguistics . Students will work intensively on example sets taken from a broad range of different languages, to discuss different analyses, and to evaluate different theoretical proposals. The course closes with a written test.

Inhalt:

This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar Introduction to Linguistics , which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

Inhalt:

The colloquium is primarily aimed at graduate students (MA and PhD candidates) who are working on a thesis, or are developing their research questions. Students will be expected to present their work, and engage with the other participants and the lecturer in discussions of key concepts in method and theory. Please contact the lecturer via email if you wish to attend, and give an indication of your research interests.
The colloquium is also open to interested linguists of all backgrounds who wish to participate in general exchange of ideas, and we may, depending on the programme, also be able to incorporate additional presentations; please check with the lecturer beforehand.

Die Veranstaltung kann für Studierende des Bacherlorstudiengangs „Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft als Seminar (8 ECTS) für das Vertiefungsmodul und im Masterstudiengang „General Linguistics“ als Seminar (8 ECTS) für das Mastermodul 2 „Sprachvariation und Sprachwandel“ eingebracht werden. In diesem Fall muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung, wie auch die FlexNow-Prüfungsanmeldung über den FlexNow-Zugang „Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" erfolgen.

Inhalt:

In diesem Seminar werden die zentralen Phänomene der deutschen Grammatik wie z.B. das Tempus- und das Nominalsystem im Vergleich zu anderen Sprachen behandelt. Dabei werden nicht nur die Unterschiede, sondern auch die Gemeinsamkeiten der grammatischen Systeme diskutiert.

Inhalt:

There are several theoretical approaches to analysing syntax; in this course we will take a data-driven and theory-neutral approach, based on a close examination of different phenomena from a range of different languages. Taking these as our point of departure, we will explore the relevance of a number of theoretical concepts from various typologically-oriented approaches to syntax, in particular Role and Reference Grammar, and Construction Grammar. Participants will be expected to work on a particular phenomenon of their choice, using data from a language of their choice, and to present the findings in class as an oral presentation (and, depending on the credits required, in the form of a term paper). Participants should look at the list of topics and let me know their preferences at the latest in the first week of term. It is possible (and likely) that more than one person will work on the same topic. Topics outside of this list may be considered: please contact me in advance if you wish to adopt a different topic.
