Inhalt:
The course deals with the analysis of modern political campaigns in Germany and worldwide. Throughout the semester a range of topics will be covered, including both theoretical and practical side, as well as traditional and modern ways of campaigning. The seminar consists of three modules. The first one presents students with the legal framework of campaigning in Germany and discusses the history of political campaigns. Afterwards, in the second module the practical side is covered, including such topics as political advertising (especially negative campaigning), electoral slogans, issue ownership, scandals and creative tricks that professionals applied. This will be followed by a close focus on the digitalization and the future of political campaigns. Quite a big emphasis is laid on successful examples of campaigns, such as Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns, the Emanuel Macron’s presidential campaign, Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, etc.
