For students taking this course as a "Seminar", the methodological basics are introduced in the early weeks of term in a separately organized block "Methods and Theories in Linguistics". Depending on the degree course and module for which you intend to take this seminar, this may be obligatory or recommended. Scheinanforderungen:

3/4/6 ECTS (BA Ergänzungsmodul in combination with the course Methods and Theories , 1 ECTS): regular active participation in class + oral presentation + oral exam (20 min)

8 ECTS sind nur für BA-Studierende nach Absprache mit dem Dozenten vor Semesterbeginn möglich.

Modulanbindungen:
Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 3, 4 oder 6 ECTS im Rahmen eines Seminars oder einer frei wählbaren Übung in der englischen Sprachwissenschaft erforderlich sind.

Combination with "Methods and Theories in Linguistics":
In the early weeks of term, we offer an introductory block familiarizing students with linguistic research methods (the Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics"): https://univis.uni-bamberg.de/form?dsc=anew/lecture_view&lvs=guk/angl/engls/method&anonymous=1&founds=guk/angl/engls/method&sem=2021w&codeset=utf8. Participation in this Übung is recommended for anyone with a strong interest in Linguistics. For those BA students planning on doing their Ergänzungsmodul in Linguistics, for all students doing Lehramt Gymnasium and for all MA students, the course is obligatory at a certain point in their studies, so it is recommended to do it as early as possible. These participants are required to reserve the following times and dates: Friday, 29 October 2021, 8-10 am, Thursday, 11 November 2021, 8-10 am, and Friday, 12 November 2021, 8-11 am. Inhalt:: The seminar will introduce students to the study of the English lexicon. After the discussion of a few basic terms such as linguistic sign, morpheme, lexeme we will first be concerned with word-formation (the patterns used to form lexemes in English) and semantic structures within the lexicon (e.g. synonymy, polysemy, lexical fields etc.). In the second half of the term we will deal with the applied branch of lexicology, i.e. lexicography. We will analyse different types of dictionaries and discuss their individual advantages and drawbacks. Finally, it is intended to examine the functions of dictionaries in foreign language learning. Participants in the seminar will be asked to prepare individual topics and present them in class. At the end of term, there will be a written exam on lexicological aspects of English.

English Phonetics and Phonology A

It is planned that this course will take place in its regular classroom (not online!). Participants with a preference for online teaching can choose English Phonetics and Phonology C (Wed, 8:30-10:00 a.m.), which will be taught via MS Teams. Please also register in FlexNow for the complementary course "Improving your pronunciation", which involves two individual 15-minute appointments in the course of the semester.

Students who register for more than one course will lose their right to participate in any one of the courses. Multiple registration is allowed for the waiting list only.

The number of participants is limited to 15.

For students moving to Bamberg from other universities, ERASMUS students and those who urgently need the credit, a limited number of places will be reserved for late registration. In case of overbooking, please contact the lecturer concerning your admission to the course.

Inhalt:

This course is concerned with central aspects of phonetics and basic phonological concepts. It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress. Core readings and texts for transcription will be made available on the Virtual Campus after each session.
