Modulanbindungen:
Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge der englischen Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 3, 4 oder 6 ECTS erforderlich sind.
Inhalt:
This seminar is a general introduction to the English language of the Early Modern English (EModE) period, 1500–1700. Apart from relevant general historical, social and language-ideological issues, the focus will be on major processes of variation and change affecting EModE at all structural levels – spelling and vocabulary, phonology, morphology, and syntax. The seminar will be guided by the following general questions: (i) Which aspects of EModE are ‘modern’, which ‘early’ ? And (ii) is EModE best regarded as a distinct synchronic variety of English, or rather as a mere bridge between Middle English and the present-day state of the language? Thus, the discussion of EModE will highlight one of the fundamental problems in historical linguistics, namely the conflict between the (necessarily) simplified view of language as a synchronically stable system on the one hand, and the view of language as characterised by perpetual change.

4. Language of instruction:

5. Prerequisites

Participants must have passed the Introduction to English Linguistics and English Phonetics & Phonology.
Inhalt:
This seminar will focus on major contrasts between English and German at several linguistic levels: Syntax, morphology (including word-formation), phonetics and phonology, and to some extent also discourse pragmatics. In discussing differences between the two languages, participants will (i) become more explicitly aware of phenomena they may be implicitly aware of, (ii) learn about lesser-known phenomena, (iii) practice to verbalise their observations at an adequate level of technicality, and (iv) gain some insights into (typological) differences between languages more generally. The course aims to be of value both from a purely linguistic perspective (knowledge-building and acquisition of verbalization skills) and from an applied perspective (learning to explain differences and tackle problems, e.g. in language teaching). Based on theoretical texts, we will frequently look at language data, analysing English and German texts and discussing them in terms of ‘quality’, stylistic level and grammaticality, or directly comparing an English (or German) original to a translation.
