Inhalt:

London, probably more than any other city, is the subject and setting of an immense wealth of fictional and historical narratives, urban legends and myths, which to a considerable extent shape our perception and understanding of the metropolis. By examining representations of London in a varied selection of text forms from the Victorian era until today, we want to trace key motifs and narratives, identify how they relate to each other, and discuss their significance for popular visions of the British capital. Rather than following a strictly chronological approach, this course will focus on reoccurring themes, as well as depictions of places in the city: We will explore how e.g. poverty, the night in London, or the Underground have been por-trayed; we will discuss the shift from and the schism between depictions of London as 'imperial capital' to 'postcolonial metropolis', and examine which notions of London are revealed by personifications of the city from the last centuries.
