Inhalt:

Frauen beteiligen sich immer mehr am Arbeitsmarkt. Trotzdem arbeiten Frauen immer noch viel weniger als Männer, sie verdienen weniger pro Stunde, und wählen typische Frauenberufen. Frauen sind nach wie vor noch immer mehr für Haushaltsaufgaben verantwortlich als Männer. Ziel dieses Kurses ist eine Beschreibung und Erklärung diese Genderungleichheiten am Arbeitsmarkt (und im Haushalt) zu geben. Wie groß sind die Genderunterschiede und in welchem Bereich liegen sie vor? Wie haben sich diese Genderunterschiede während der Zeit entwickelt? Wie verhalten verschiedene Länder sich zu einander? Und vor allem: wie kann man die Genderunterscheide erklären? Ökonomische Theorien (Human Capital, New Home Economics, Sex Segregation), kulturelle Theorien (Sozialisation, Doing Gender), und Theorien über Diskrimination werden diskutiert. Auch die Rolle von makrostrukturellen und -kulturellen Faktoren (Institutionen und Gender Normen) werden besprochen.
Lernziele:
1.Studenten können die unterschiedlichen Typen der Gender-Ungleichheit am Arbeitsmarkt (und im Haushalt) umschreiben, und können Genderungleichheit anhand von bestehenden Theorien erklären. Dies wird geprüft anhand einer Übernahme eines (Gruppen-) Referats. 2. Studenten können soziologische Probleme bezüglich Gender-Ungleichheit formulieren, Studenten können Erklärungen und Hypothesen anhand von bestehenden Theorien rundum Genderungleichheit formulieren, und Studenten können anhand der empirischen Literatur beurteilen welche Theorien/Hypothesen standhalten und welche nicht. Dies wird geprüft anhand eines Gruppenpapers.

Women increasingly participate on the labor market. Notwithstanding, women still work less often than men, they earn less per hour, and choose typical female-dominated occupations. Also, women still do the majority of household tasks. Goal of this course is to describe and explain gender inequalities at the labor market (and in the household). How large are these gender disparities and in which domain? How did these inequalities develop over time and how do countries compare? And, above all, how can these gender inequalities be explained? Economic theories (Human Capital, New Home Economics, Sex Segregation), cultural theories (Socialization, Doing Gender), und theories on discrimination will be discussed. Also, the role of macro-structural and –cultural factors (institutions and gender norms) will be treated.
Learning goals:

This course deals about sociological aspects of family relationships, in specific partner formation, divorce and remarriage and its consequences (in specific for children), and relationships between parents and their offspring. It treats the relevance of these subjects for social inequality and social cohesion, it treats existing theories and explanations of these phenomena, treats developments and cross-country differences herein, and the connection between the subjects.

This course deals about sociological aspects of family relationships, in specific partner formation, divorce and remarriage and its consequences (in specific for children), and relationships between parents and their offspring. It treats the relevance of these subjects for social inequality and social cohesion, it treats existing theories and explanations of these phenomena, treats developments and cross-country differences herein, and the connection between the subjects.
Learning goals: 1. Students understand the relevance of and the connection between the specific subthemes of family relationships, and can give relevant explanations. This will be tested with a (group) presentation. 2. Students can formulate sociological problems regarding the subthemes, they can derive hypotheses from existing theories, and they can assess on basis of existing empirical literature which hypotheses/theories are supported and which not. This will be tested with a (group) paper.

Inhalt:

Frauen beteiligen sich immer mehr am Arbeitsmarkt. Trotzdem arbeiten Frauen immer noch viel weniger als Männer, sie verdienen weniger pro Stunde, und wählen typische Frauenberufen. Frauen sind nach wie vor noch immer mehr für Haushaltsaufgaben verantwortlich als Männer. Ziel dieses Kurses ist eine Beschreibung und Erklärung diese Genderungleichheiten am Arbeitsmarkt (und im Haushalt) zu geben. Wie groß sind die Genderunterschiede und in welchem Bereich liegen sie vor? Wie haben sich diese Genderunterschiede während der Zeit entwickelt? Wie verhalten verschiedene Länder sich zu einander? Und vor allem: wie kann man die Genderunterscheide erklären? Ökonomische Theorien (Human Capital, New Home Economics, Sex Segregation), kulturelle Theorien (Sozialisation, Doing Gender), und Theorien über Diskrimination werden diskutiert. Auch die Rolle von makrostrukturellen und -kulturellen Faktoren (Institutionen und Gender Normen) werden besprochen.
Lernziele:
1. Studenten können die unterschiedlichen Typen der Gender-Ungleichheit am Arbeitsmarkt (und im Haushalt) umschreiben, und können Genderungleichheit anhand von bestehenden Theorien erklären. Dies wird geprüft anhand einer Übernahme eines (Gruppen-) Referats. 2. Studenten können soziologische Probleme bezüglich Gender-Ungleichheit formulieren, Studenten können Erklärungen und Hypothesen anhand von bestehenden Theorien rundum Genderungleichheit formulieren, und Studenten können anhand der empirischen Literatur beurteilen welche Theorien/Hypothesen standhalten und welche nicht. Dies wird geprüft anhand eines Gruppenpapers.

Women increasingly participate on the labor market. Notwithstanding, women still work less often than men, they earn less per hour, and choose typical female-dominated occupations. Also, women still do the majority of household tasks. Goal of this course is to describe and explain gender inequalities at the labor market (and in the household). How large are these gender disparities and in which domain? How did these inequalities develop over time and how do countries compare? And, above all, how can these gender inequalities be explained? Economic theories (Human Capital, New Home Economics, Sex Segregation), cultural theories (Socialization, Doing Gender), und theories on discrimination will be discussed. To treat important theoretical and methodological advances within this research a. Macro-micro interactions b. Institutional explanations (from typologies to continuous measures) c. Cross-national comparative approaches d. Longitudinal designs 3. To learn students how to review advancement in a specific field by review of the literature on a specific subtheme (in order to prepare well for a master’s thesis)
