Please note that the first part of the course will be taught as a block seminar on may 3/4. Two sessions of the second part will be taught online. Consequently, NO sessions will take place on the following Thursdays: May 2nd, June 6, June 13, June 27 and July 4.
- Inhalt
- Motherhood and Fatherhood have always been central themes in African American literature and culture. Under the inhumane institution of slavery, enslaved parents and their children were routinely separated for reasons of profit and social control. At the same time, black women were frequently expected to take care of their mistresses children and forced to bear their masters . Until today, the trauma of slavery and of other forms of racial violence committed against black children and their caretakers continue to feature prominently in work of art by African Americans. Engaging with these traumatic histories and experiences, but also with histories of resistance and dreams of a better future, Black writers and artists have explored family lineages and relations, countering racist stereotypes surrounding black parenthood and imagining an America in which Black families of whatever constellation are safe from racial violence and discrimination.
In this course, we will use concepts of critical race studies to examine literary texts and cultural artifacts from the 18th to the 21st century in order to discuss representations of Black families in African American culture. We will read poetry and narratives dealing with slavery and its aftermath as well as short stories and plays addressing African American experiences of motherhood and fatherhood between the turn of the century and WWII. During the second half of the course, we will analyze works by artists from the Civil Rights era to the present, looking not only at depictions of Black mothers, fathers, and families in literary texts but also in popular music, painting, and on screen.

Reading both texts before the beginning of the course is highly recommended. Other course materials will be announced and/or made available via the VC.
