- This interdisciplinary course has been designed especially for North-American exchange students and German students, inviting them to study each other’s cultures together. Readings and classroom discussion will be both in English and German.
Narratives of the American West and of how it was “won” have greatly influenced U.S. American culture and self-understanding, especially since the mid-19th century. In the 1950s and 60s, the Western even dominated both TV screens and box offices, and even though this genre was replaced by other popular forms in the later 20th-century, it has recently experienced something of a renaissance through movies like True Grit (2010) and TV shows like Godless (2018). In addition to narratives set in the Southwestern United States, plots, character types, and conflicts popularized by the Western have also often been incorporated into other genres, for example in science fiction shows like Star Trek (1966-1969) and Firefly (2002), attesting to the continuing productivity of the genre in American culture.
Maybe more surprisingly, the Western has also been hugely popular in German culture, exemplified most clearly by the 19th-century novels written by Karl May and their later (West and East) German films versions. Germany is also home to several Western towns and annual reenactments that speak to Germans’ nostalgic fascination with the genre and its central figures.
This course examines the 19th-century presence of the Western genre in American and German culture as well as 20th century popular TV and film versions shaped by the context of the Cold War. We will interrogate the genre’s relation to history (especially the history of Westward Expansion and the Cold War) and its connection to ideas about German and American national identity. We will further analyze Native American reactions to and rewritings of the genre that expose its settler colonial underpinnings.
