- While the term “special relationship” originally described the alliance between the United States and Britain, President John F. Kennedy adapted it to characterize US-Israeli relations. This seminar in American Cultural Studies primarily examines the American perspective, delving into historical arguments regarding the claim that there is not only a community of strategic interests but also of common values and ideals.
In the first segment of the semester, we move beyond recent conflicts and political debates to trace the roots of the bond in a deeper historical and cultural context. Since the Puritans ardently embraced Biblical narratives that imbued the land of Israel with symbolic significance, Americans have viewed their nation as a new manifestation of Biblical Israel. During the War of Independence and the early Republic, the Exodus story captivated the imagination, while Americans also scrutinized the perceived political system of the Biblical Israelites for inspiration in crafting and defending their own constitution. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, many immigrants regarded America as their “Promised Land”; Civil Rights activists framed their struggle in relation to the ancient liberation story.
In the latter part of the semester, our focus narrows to US relations with the State of Israel. After exploring the American contribution to Zionism and the foundation of Israel in 1948, we will analyze the cultural impacts of major political events such as the Suez Crisis, the Six-Day War, The Yom Kippur War, the Camp David Accords, the Oslo Accords and the Second Intifada. Special attention will be accorded to Evangelical Christians and Jewish-American organizations dedicated to nurturing the alliance. Similarly, we will address the various fluctuations and even fractures in this partnership, from the Obama administration’s efforts to put “daylight” between the countries to the BDS movement’s attempts to delegitimize the Jewish state entirely. Of course, we will not ignore the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and America’s position in it.
