- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
- Each session will include a combination of lecture by the lecturer, student presentations and a general discussion. Throughout the course each student is expected to deliver at least two presentations (one of which could be substituted by a written assignment depending on the overall number of participants). The primary working language for this seminar is English, although written assignments (if any) could be delivered in German.
- Inhalt
- The course will cast a sociological perspective on the process of aging, or, literally, the process of growing old. In this course, we will explore the meanings and experiences of being ‘old’, how these differ across societies and cultures, and how these may have changed over time as our societies underwent social change. We will also touch upon many different issues related to aging, such as retirement and post-retirement employment behavior, consumption practices and social activity of the elderly, their economic, physical and psychological well-being, demographic behavior, grandparenting and intergenerational ties, etc. Finally, we will discuss how aging transforms our societies, and what challenges and opportunities it brings.
The goal of the course is to empower students with state-of-the-art theoretical and empirical knowledge regarding the process of aging. Such knowledge should allow them to better appreciate the diversity of experiences associated with aging, critically evaluate those experiences and skillfully engage in relevant debates both in private and in public.
