Inhalt
While the United States has proclaimed itself to be the land of liberty and equality since its founding, with literary and cultural texts perpetuating the Enlightenment ideals underlying these claims, there has also long been a countertradition, or countertraditions, pointing out and criticizing the nation’s betrayal of its own ideals: American Gothic and, more recently, American Horror. This seminar aims to follow the development of these two closely related genres from the pre-colonial to the contemporary period, asking how the cultural anxieties U.S.-American literature and culture are haunted by change (or don’t) over time. To do this, we will read and analyze literary texts—both classics of the Gothic and Horror traditions and more contemporary replies to them using relevant theoretical literature. In addition, we will watch contemporary horror movies and TV shows, some original and some adaptations of our primary texts to analyze how these two traditions work in different media.

Students are asked to buy and start reading the following texts BEFORE the beginning of class:
  • Edgar Allan Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher (1839)
  • Herman Melville, Benito Cereno (1856)
  • Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House (1959)
  • N. K. Jemisin, The City We Became (2020)
  • T. Kingfisher, What Moves the Dead (2022)

Students are also asked to watch the following movies and/or (episodes of) TV shows BEFORE the respective sessions:
  • Mother! (2017)
  • Get Out (2017)
  • The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
  • The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
