- Inhalt
- A nine-year old narrator named Oskar (complete with not tin drum but tambourine) and a middle-aged psychiatrist reflecting on the way we "normalize the terrible strangeness of inner life with a variety of convenient fictions" are the widely divergent protagonists of two recent American novels both exploring a less than coherent world in post 9/11 New York. Both texts attempt this via a typically post-modern mixture of documentary material and fiction that stretches the boundaries of the form.
The seminar will give you a chance to get to know and discuss the most recent work of two celebrated young American authors tackling central topics of contemporary literary studies. It will also require your willingness and ability to work intensely with the texts themselves since not much criticism exists so far.

- Texts to be purchased and read in preparation: Johnathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Houghton Mifflin, 2005) and Siri Hustvedt, The Sorrows of an American (Hodder & Stoughton, 2008).
