- "In reality there is no kind of evidence or argument by which
one can show that Shakespeare, or any other writer is 'good'.
Nor is there any way of definitely proving that - for instance
- Warwick Deeping is 'bad'. Ultimately there is no test of
literary merit except survival, which is itself an index to
majority opinion." (George Orwell, “Lear, Tolstoy and the
Fool”)Is it quite true what Orwell had to say about the
literary canon? What is a literary classic and how did it
enter the canon in the first place? What is a canon? Who or
what defines a text as canonical and: have Western European
societies always had a canon?
It is questions such as these we will tackle in the PS II
"Canonical Texts". The seminar is aimed at students studying
for Lehramt Gymnasium. We will begin by discussing the idea of
'canon' in the first three sessions (a reader will be
provided). The following sessions will be concerned with the
individual texts on the reading list. We will spend one half
of each session on the text as such, the second half will be
devoted to the history of its canonical status, i.e. we will
ask (under the guidance of one of the students) how when and
why the text became a classic.
The aim of this seminar is threefold: first, to introduce you
to texts relevant for teaching in the Gymnasium; second, to
discuss the shaping of the English or American canon with an
eye on the (non)sense of teaching it at the Gymnasium; third,
to prepare your first Hausarbeit..
