- 8 ECTS: regelmäßige aktive Teilnahme; Präsentation; Hausarbeit in englischer Sprache nach Maßgabe des Style Sheet (BA: 3.500-4.500 Wörter; Magister, Lehramt, Master: 4.500-6.000 Wörter)

- Inhalt
- Friendship is a distinctly personal relationship that seems in many ways universal, yet it is also culturally and historically specific, and its implications are often deeply political. Both in Germany and the United States, notions of friendship have been affected by secularization and urbanization, by people s geographical and economic mobility, and by changing notions of gender, sexuality, race and the body; at the same time, friendship itself has been a productive cultural force that has kept challenging social and political boundaries. This seminar invites German and North American students, as well as students of Germanistik and Anglistik/Amerikanistik, to study each other s cultures together, focusing on the changing role friendship has played on either side of the Atlantic at different points in time.
We will begin our exploration with a survey of the parameters most commonly employed in philosophical and sociological attempts to distinguish friendship from love, parental care, or professional associations. For the main part of the seminar, we will compare German and American poems, letters, short stories and novels that address the transgressive, transformative power of friendship in particularly suggestive ways, and sound out the challenges individual friendships may have to face in oppressive social and political frameworks; topics will include the high-flying ideals of the romantic cult of friendship, the possibilities and limitations of interracial friendships, the roles of gender and race in friendships among white men in the 1950s and among black women in the 1960s, the politics of friendship in East Germany, and the tensions between friendship and erotic love.
Please note: We will read texts in English and German, and also discuss them in both languages.
