- Jane Austen is certainly one of the best-known authors in English literature. Even though she only wrote six complete novels in her short life, Austen has been an audience favourite ever since she published her books in the early 19th century. Her novels have been studied by generations of students and artists of all kinds and each generation both drew on previous interpretations and analyses of her works and added new ones. This course will specifically look at how such interpretations and analyses in all kinds of scholarship and media have shaped and keep re-shaping the popular and academic discouse of Austen. To do so, we will look at her novels and their adaptations in film, TV and online content such as web series or fanfictions. In addition, we will read and analyse some of Austen's unfinished works as well as her minor works and letters to see how she herself participated in the literary discourse of her own time. A special focus will be laid on reception theory to study the effect of audience interpretation and adaptation on the cultural understanding of Austen's writing. Hence, the course material will cover both primary texts (by Austen and by other writers/filmmakers/other artists) and scholarly texts on adaptation, reception theory and discourse formation.
