- Inhalt
- One of the oldest forms of cultural expression, drama varies across time and place. In this Übung we will read plays of the last seventy years - acknowledged "classics" of modern drama that can be found on our reading list and contemporary writing for the stage.
If you study literature, the most important thing to do is: read, read and, yes, read. But what to read? This course is designed to offer some help in this dilemma. And it is by no means only addressed at students preparing for their exams - but to any student of English literature, no matter whether first year or last.
Each participant is expected to give a short presentation on the major topics of one play and to lead us into discussion. The main part of each session, however, should be devoted to close readings of scenes from the play, and to situating the text with regard to its historical and social context, genre, performance history (adaptations) and practice.
There will be room to explore the influence of the epic theatre and the theatre of cruelty and we will be reading plays representative of the theatre of the absurd and in-yer-face theatre.
As part of the course, we may attend one or two stagings in the area (Bamberg, Erlangen, Nürnberg). We will thus be able to assess the significance of performance in contemporary culture and negotiate how drama has the potential to re-interpret society on various levels.
We may read plays by Terence Rattigan, Noel Coward, Samuel Beckett, John Osborne, David Hare, Harold Pinter, Peter Shaffer, Caryl Churchill, Michael Frayn, Sarah Kane, Mark Ravenhill, Tom Stoppard, Alan Bennett or Martin McDonagh, to name but a few. In September, I will invite those that have already registered by then to a site on the VC. Students will be asked to participate in a survey on which play they'd like to discuss in class. However, there will be 2-3 set texts that will be announced on the VC. Students should get hold of them as soon as possible. As we will talk about a new play at least every other week, students should be prepared to do a considerable amount of reading during the term.
