- Inhalt
- Shakespeare's history plays may be less accessible for contemporary readers than the famous tragedies or comedies, but they are hardly less fascinating. In this course, we shall look at the plays of the so-called Lancaster-Tetralogy (Richard II, Henry IV, Parts I and II, Henry V) and the York-Tetralogy (Henry V, Parts I-III and Richard III) in order to explore the peculiar tension between history and its dramatic representation, which surfaces in these plays. Our discussions shall focus in particular on the complex relation between political ideas and social experience as represented in the plays. Topics to be addressed will include the "Tudor Myth", the concepts of "the King's two Bodies", "the great chain of being" or "the divine right of kings" as well as the issue of social order and the myth of the Wheel of Fortune. Performances or film versions of the plays will be included in the discussion where available and applicable.
A site on the Virtual Campus with an outline of the course, texts and topics for presentations will be available for this class from March on. Access on this site will be given upon registration.
