Requirements for successful completion of the course:
2 ECTS: regular active participation in class + short oral presentation
8 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper of 4500-6000 words

- Inhalt
- This subject is ideally suited for a course compressed into two weekends. The literary texts are all short poems of an almost identical form, and individual examples lend themselves to class presentation and to a term paper combining scholarly research and close reading.
Selections for study will range from the earliest examples in the Renaissance to more recent examples of the form. Most of the concerns of human life have found expression in sonnets including romantic love, personal crisis and introspection, intellectual speculation, mortal anxiety, and war. Both British and American poets will be represented.
Texts:
Copies of the sonnets we will read are available online. It would be helpful for students to buy a copy of The Norton Anthology of Poetry, used or new, any edition, and either the full or shorter edition. This purchase can be done online, and it shouldn t be very expensive. Of course even a portable on-line device could provide instant access to the poems for consideration. A hard copy, however, is always handier and more useful for annotation, and I strongly recommend that you have a hard copy of each poem we discuss in class whether on sheets of paper on in a printed anthology.
Requirements:
Faithful class attendance and perseverance (this course includes some long sessions).
One class presentation of a sonnet not discussed in class.
One approximately 20-page (double-spaced) paper concerning the sonnet presented to the class: any historical, cultural background, if relevant; a succinct survey of scholarly or critical commentary; and then a close reading of the sonnet. Because of the compressed calendar time of the seminar, the paper can be completed and submitted later.
