- Since a number of students seem to be interested in this type of course, I am offering this second course as "Group B".
If you study literature, the most important thing to do is: read, read and, yes, read. But what to read, and what not to read? - This is the question many students ask (especially when it comes to prepare that good old reading list for the exam, no matter whether for the final exam or "only" for Zwischenprüfung). After all, one is supposed to acquire a fair knowledge of a wide range of texts of different genres, from different authors and periods. So "where shall I begin?"
This course is designed to offer some help in this dilemma. And it is by no means only addressed at students preparing for their exams - but to any student of English literature, no matter whether first year or last.
In each session, we will read and discuss one text from our reading list for English Literature (or two texts, if we do poetry). Proceeding in chronological order from the Renaissance to the Present, and considering poetry, drama and prose alike, we will make a gradual progress through literary history in the course of the term.
Each participant is expected to give a short introduction to the major topics of one text and to lead us into discussion. Short means short - i.e. no longer than 15 minutes!!! The main part of each session, however, should be devoted to close readings of the texts, and to situate the text with regard to genre and period.
On a site in the Virtual Campus you will see the texts we are going to discuss in this term. Please get hold of them as soon as possible. Unfortunately, due to the later instalment of this second group, we cannot give choices but will have a fixed list of texts. You can, however, select your presentation topic, of course. ;-)
All participants in this class are expected to do a short presentation (even if they do not need a Schein from this course). Besides, you should be prepared to do a considerable amount of reading before and during the term. This class will only work if we will all read all the texts!

2. Requirements to obtain a "Schein":
2 ECTS are given for regular, active participation and the short presentation. 4 ECTS are given for providing an extensive handout (1000-1500 words) in addition to your presentation.
