- Wordsworth speaks of his early poetry as a response to "the increasing accumulation of men in cities" and Baudelaire, who influenced T.S. Eliot („The Waste Land“), writes of his later work as shaped by "the haunting of enormous cities". In this seminar, we will study the modern city, its crowds, its locations and its architecture as a rapidly transforming social space that both shapes the life stories of individuals and is reshaped by new forms of literary production and circulation. Urban biographies are biographies about individuals, but also about cities. Cities are fabrications of the mind, but also shape specific ways of perception and cognition. In this way literature about London provides epistemological patterns that reflect the changing concepts of the world we live in. The big city is a field of experience, at once subjective and objective. As self-reflexive figure for "textual space" the Metropolis offers a journey from eighteenth-century literature to the present. Writers and critics to be studied include John Gay, Jonathan Swift, Samuel Johnson, William Wordsworth, William Blake, Thomas De Quincey, Charles Dickens, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf and contemporary writers such as Hanif Kureishi, Sukhdev Sandhu etc. Some attention will be given to authors who shaped our theoretical ideas about modern cities such as Walter Benjamin, Georg Simmel, and Rem Koolhaas ("Delirious New York").
