Inhalt
The story of English in the Pacific started with Captain Cook’s arrival in Australia in 1770. In this course we will focus on varieties of English that have since evolved, incorporating linguistic, historical, political and sociocultural aspects, as well as their relationship with indigenous languages spoken in the respective countries.
We will study so-called L1 varieties, such as Australian English and New Zealand English, and their dialects; contact varieties, which show the reciprocal influence of indigenous languages and English; and creoles, such as Tok Pisin (spoken in Papua New Guinea) Bislama (spoken in Vanuatu), or Pijin (spoken in the Solomon Islands).
