Scheinanforderungen:
2 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation (30 min)
4 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation (45 min)
6 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + written paper
3/4/6 ECTS (BA “Ergänzungsmodul” in combination with the course “Methods and Theories”, 1 ECTS): regular active participation in class + oral presentation + oral exam (20 min)
8 ECTS sind nur für BA-Studierende nach Absprache mit der Dozentin vor Semesterbeginn möglich.

Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge der englischen Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 3, 4 oder 6 ECTS erforderlich sind.
- Inhalt
- Description:
Pidgins may arise in conditions where speakers of different languages try to communicate, for instance in business matters. These forms of communication developed in large numbers in European colonies, and where English provided most of the words (i.e. was the lexifier language), we speak of English-oriented pidgins. When these language forms developed into full-fledged native languages, they are usually called creoles.
The focus of this seminar will be the linguistic features of English-oriented pidgins and creoles on the levels of vocabulary (including strategies of word-formation, metaphor and paraphrase), phonology, morphology and syntax. Here, these languages differ both from the lexifier language and the native languages of the speakers. We will also take a look at pidgins and creoles as special cases of more general simplification processes that may occur through language contact and second language acquisition, and discuss the (possible) relevance of creole languages to theories of language origins. All of these points will be discussed on the basis of the historical setting and geographical distribution of English-oriented pidgin and creole languages, the conditions of their use, genesis and different stages of 'pidginization' and 'creolization', and the difference between pidgins, creoles and 'mixed languages' more generally. Practical work with actual language data will be emphasized.
The Übung, which accompanies the seminar (Wednesday, 14:15-15:00 in U9/01.04) is designed to discuss project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided. The Übung will not start before the second week of term. Further information will be given in the first session of the seminar.
