Inhalt
In this class we will investigate the hidden histories of English words. Like detectives we will trace the origin of the most common and mundane words and find out, for example, that nice originally meant ‘foolish and silly’, that glamour comes from grammar, and that to sell originally meant simply ‘to give’.

Etymology is the investigation of word histories. During the course we will not only trace the linear histories of English words but also delve into the matters of historical and comparative reconstruction. We will examine how words arise and evolve over time, how their forms and meanings change. We will study the reasons behind, and the types of sound changes as well as genetic relationships between languages. One session will be devoted entirely to the study of lexical borrowings. We will learn how to distinguish borrowings from cognates and find out the major sources of English borrowed vocabulary. Histories of words are connected with histories of peoples. Therefore, a part of the discussion will be devoted to the social factors that trigger language change.

From a practical point of view, students will learn how to use etymological dictionaries of the English language and how to analyse lexical data from a historical perspective.
