  Cognitive Aspects of Grammatical Variation in English

Zeit und Ort: Do 10:00 - 12:00, U11/00.16; Bemerkung zu Zeit und Ort: In the second week of term, MA students as well as BA/Lehramt students in their Vertiefungsmodul are expected to take part in an introduction to research methods in the computer pool U5/02.23 (unless they have already participated in the Übung “Methods and Theories in Linguistics”). Thus, these participants are required to reserve the following times and dates: Mon, 24 October 2016, 8–10 h OR 10–12 h OR 12–14 h AND Thu, 27 October 2016, 8–14 h OR Fri, 28 October 2016, 8–14 h. To coordinate course dates and times, please register for the following Virtual Campus course by 20 October at the latest and take part in the survey you will find there: https://vc.uni-bamberg.de/moodle/enrol/index.php?id=18361 . You will receive notice of the time slots you have been allotted on 21 October.

3. Requirements for successful completion of the course:

4 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation
5/6/8 ECTS in MA English and American Studies Consolidation Module English Linguistics I/II/III: regular active participation in class + oral exam
5 ECTS in other programmes or modules: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + assignment of 2500-3500 words
6 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper of 3000-4000 words
8 ECTS BA Anglistik/Amerikanistik Vertiefungsmodul: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper of 3500-4500 words
8 ECTS in other programmes or modules, and visiting students: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper of 4500-6000 words

Inhalt
The grammar of English (its morphology and especially its syntax) provides no prefabricated, unique ways of saying (or writing) something you want to express, but rather offers a variety of grammatical variants with identical or similar meanings. For instance, without implying a meaning difference, you can say either of the variants:

(1) The event is aimed at children and parents / parents and children.
(2) Bob and Bill have / They’ve met before.
(3) They lighted / lit the stack of wood from below.
(4) He was an alive, happy soul / ?a happy, alive soul.
(5) He checked the car whether / to see whether it was in good condition.
(6) I prevented her going / from going.
(7) Supposing that / Supposing you had good marks, would you go to university?
(8) Sandy picked up the paper / picked the paper up.
(9) He had to give the FBI his fingerprints / his fingerprints to the FBI.
(10) The other person’s nose / nose of the other person was broken.

On the other hand, there are subtle meaning differences, mirrored in the grammatical differences, between the following:

(11) They heard the clatter of hoofs / hooves from the outside.
(12) The shed burned / burnt down.
(13) The teacher helped him complete / to complete his homework.

What is interesting about grammatical variation phenomena such as (1)-(13) is the fact that they are not random, but allow us to gather insights into the ways speakers and hearers process language: Cognitive processes in language use involve an intricate network of interacting functional factors that may reinforce or counteract each other, such as semantic, phonological and various processing-related effects (e.g. those of frequency, complexity, economy, givenness). Since most of these are linguistic universals working independently of time and a particular language, they afford insights into the forces that design and shape grammar and drive linguistic change.

Grammatical variation and change have been at the focus of linguistic interest for the past few decades. Their investigation has been facilitated by the use of ever-increasing electronic text collections (corpora) in which we can explore and measure native speaker behaviour in cases where the grammar provides two or more options. An analysis of the forces underlying native speaker intuitions will have the useful side effect of sensitizing students to grammatical choices in English as a foreign language.

Students in this seminar will be expected to present a case study based on a research article and to carry out and report on a related corpus-based small-scale research project in their termpapers.

The Übung that accompanies the Seminar (Thursdays, 9:15 – 10:00 h) is designed to discuss oral presentations, handouts, practical tasks and termpaper projects individually and/or in small groups. Personal arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Thus, clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.
