- Inhalt
- Description:
This Übung (tutorial) is offered for all those interested in hands-on experience of Old and Middle English through close encounters with the literature of the medieval period. Everybody with an interest in medieval English and medieval English literature is welcome. Prior knowledge of earlier stages of English is no prerequisite for successful participation in this class. Everybody is welcome!
During the course of the semester we will read, analyze and translate a selection of texts from both periods, among them:
• Cædmon and the beginning of Old English poetry
• On the decline of learning “before everything was destroyed and burned down”: Alfred’s Preface to his translation of Gregory’s Cura Pastoralis
• Beowulf: The hero is taken to his funeral
• An Old English riddle
• Old English prognostics, from Ælfwine's Prayerbook (+ we’ll try it out!)
• A recipe from Bald's Leechbook (a practical aid)
• Baking bread (+ tasting the result – delicious!)
• BONUS: Wulf and Eadwacer (the shortest Old English elegy)
• Chaucer: Beginning of the Canterbury Tales
• Chaucer: To Adam the Scriveyn (+ the end of Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde)
• Chaucer: Complaint of the Poet to his Purse
• Chester Play: The Shepherds (with a video of the University of Bamberg performance of 2003!)
• Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
• The Owl and the Nightingale
• Sumer is icumen in (medieval music – beautiful!)
Come and witness the dramatic change between Old English – whose morphology and syntax was closer to Modern German than to Modern English – and Middle English, which is much closer to Modern English than to Old English.
You can profit from this class most if you attend it along with my lecture “Old and Middle English in their literary and cultural contexts”
which takes place right before this Übung (Tuesday, 14.15-15.45) but it is also possible to register for the Übung only.
