- Inhalt
- Pronunciation is particularly susceptible to the influence of the native language and most learners therefore have a foreign accent. Native speakers of English are usually able to detect a learner’s origin after hearing only a few words. In this seminar we will explore the study of second language (L2) speech from a theoretical and practical perspective. Looking at the most influential theories of L2 speech production and perception, we will see how researchers have tried to describe and explain the acquisition of L2 speech. In fact, different schools of thought sometimes make different predictions about whether a particular feature will be relatively easy or difficult to acquire. The focus of the seminar is on research practice. Step by step, we will learn how researchers go about investigating L2 speech. This includes (i) how to formulate a research question, (ii) how to design a study, (iii) how to analyze and make sense of the data and (iv) how to write a research report. We will learn a lot by looking at well-designed studies in the literature. The goal of the seminar is for you to design and conduct your own research project on some aspect of learner speech. What to investigate is entirely up to you – I welcome creative research questions. Once you are ready for data collection, you will go out and interview, measure, test or record the group of learners you are interested in (students at school or university, TV actors, people on youtube, ...). Your term paper will have the form of a research report on the results of your study.
