- Inhalt
- Description:
In this lecture we will explore the structure of the English language between the beginning of its transmission in the seventh century to about 1500. The leading question of our analysis of the phonology, morphology, lexis and syntax of English in the two different periods before and after 1100 is to what extent the 'boundary' between Old and Middle English is marked by continuing patterns and new beginnings.
Of course the linguistic developments will have to be viewed in connection with the pertinent cultural developments of the time and also the literary witnesses which provide us with the language data. In order to complement the findings on linguistic continuity and change between Old and Middle English we will also discuss continuity and change in literary traditions.
Knowledge of Old English or Middle English is no prerequisite for attending this lecture – all students are welcome. Students will profit most if they also attend the Übung “Introducing Old and Middle English” (Tuesday, 16.15-17.00) which offers hands-on experience with medieval English language and literature.
