Zeit und Ort: Do 18:15 - 19:45, U9/01.11 (außer Do 25.7.2019); Bemerkung zu Zeit und Ort: No session on July 25. In the second week of term, MA students as well as BA/Lehramt students in their Vertiefungsmodul are expected to take part in an introduction to research methods (unless they have already participated in the Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics ). Thus, these participants are required to reserve the following times and dates: Mon, 29 April 2019, 8-12 h OR 14-18 h AND Fri, 3 May 2019, 8-12 h, OR Sat, 4 May 2019, 10-14 h. To coordinate course dates and times, please register for the following Virtual Campus course by 25 April at the latest and take part in the survey you will find there: https://vc.uni-bamberg.de/moodle/course/view.php?id=32857. You will receive notice of the time slots you have been allotted on Friday, 26 April.

A limited number of places will be reserved for visiting students, students who have changed universities and students who need this class urgently as they are approaching the end of their studies. If the seminar is overbooked, the teacher will decide which students will be accepted.

3. Requirements for successful completion of the course:
4 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation with handout
5/6/8 ECTS in MA English and American Studies Consolidation Module English Linguistics I/II/III: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + oral exam
5 ECTS in other programmes or modules: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + assignment of 2500-3500 words
6 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper of 3000-4000 words
8 ECTS BA Anglistik/Amerikanistik Vertiefungsmodul: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper of 3500-4500 words
8 ECTS in other programmes or modules, and visiting students: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper of 4500-6000 words

Inhalt
Description:
'Fixed' expressions, idioms, formulaic language, patterns, constructions: how much of the language that we use is 'new', how much is 'pre-fabricated', that is, governed by 'fixation' in one way or another? How can we describe this kind of lexical fixation, for instance, in idioms such as to sleep like a log, Happy Birthday!, in next to no time, of course, face to face and A friend in need is a friend indeed? And how can we account for idioms with lexical variation and those which are not syntactically well-formed, both of which can be demonstrated by the idiom to trip/dance/tread the light fantastic? And in how far do fixed syntactic patterns which are lexically free, as for instance noun-preposition-noun constructions such as grandfather after grandfather (entered the room), differ from idioms? In which way does this 'fixation' influence our language use (both productive and receptive), and also language development? Which role does frequency of use play in these matters? What is the importance of this topic for teaching English as a foreign language? In order to approach first answers to a selection of these questions we will explore fixation in language on the basis of current studies on idioms (and phraseology in general) as well as on constructions. Among topics that we will discuss are:
  • idiom classification
  • comparison between constructions and idioms
  • the functional and stylistic potential of idioms
  • cognitive and psycholinguistic approaches to 'formulaic language'
  • learning (about) idioms and constructions in a foreign language
  • exploring idioms and constructions by means of corpus linguistics
  • the development of idioms and constructions in the history of English
  • And, last but not least, the seminar will also quite practically enhance students' knowledge of English idioms.

The Übung which accompanies the seminar (Wednesday, 9:15-10:00) is designed for discussions of project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.
