- Description:
'Authentic' Old and Middle English language has recently made some claim to fame in TV series, movies and Youtube performances. Probably most well-known among these are the vernacular scenes in the six seasons of the Canadian-Irish series "Vikings" (2013-2019), where the actors revert to early medieval vernaculars: Old English next to Old Norse, Old French, Old Low Franconian and even Proto-Latgalian. "The use of original languages throughout the series is one of the defining features of Vikings" (Justin Pollard). Public interest in the real historic stages of English is, for instance, also witnessed by the Old English spells in the BBC series "Merlin" (2008-2012). Taken together, this seems to indicate a development away from constructing fictional languages for the characterization of different ethnic groups, which was the preferred option in famous 20th-century fiction, such as Tolkien's 'Elvish' or the invented 'Klingon' in Startrek.
Also, Mystery Plays have recently been produced in original Middle English (or slightly modernized versions thereof), and even Rappers have discovered Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales for themselves on Youtube.
This lecture aims to explain and demonstrate the structure and use of Old English (ca. 700-1100) and Middle English (ca. 1100-1500) on all levels – phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, semantics and pragmatics – within the respective socio-historical settings. Before this backdrop of scholarly knowledge, selected modern performances, scenes and songs in Old and Middle English will be discussed in each session. Use of language-learning websites and books will be practiced so that by the end of term the students should be enabled to tackle original Old and Middle English texts themselves and also to evaluate to which degree historical accuracy in modern performances has actually been reached.
Knowledge of Old and/or Middle English is of course no prerequisite for attending this lecture – all students are welcome.
