Please note that in order to take part in this seminar it is necessary to have already acquired a solid knowledge of the basics of language pedagogy. It also necessary to arrange a personal appointment with the lecturer during the last week of the semester break.

- “L2 writing is a complex, multi-faceted and variable phenomenon, realised in diverse ways by differing populations of learners producing differing kinds of texts in differing societal contexts and acted upon for differing purposes in particular educational, settlement, or workplace programs around the world” (Cumming, 2006). Unsurprisingly, there is neither a comprehensive theory of second language writing nor a monolithic pedagogy that encompasses all aspects of L2 writing competencies (e.g. linguistic, cognitive, sociocultural), which are strongly linked. What is more, L2 writing has often been treated as a form-focused, linguistic exercise in EFL composition classes, stripped off its communication function due to the lack of an authentic readership, and it may therefore be perceived by some student writers as irrelevant and meaningless. This is just one among the many challenges for L2 writing teachers that this course will address.
Course objectives
• To develop a critical awareness of L2 writing pedagogies
• To evaluate the different facets of corrective feedback and assessment
• To explore the language learning affordances of collaborative writing
• To practice designing lessons with L2 writing components
• To analyse and adopt/adapt coursebook materials
• To design meaningful offline and online L2 writing activities
• To further develop participants’ academic writing and presentation skills
