The Vertiefungsmodule and Mastermodule will be examined by a term paper (3,500-4,500 and 4,500-6,000 words respectively); the Consolidation Modules will be assessed by an oral examination. - Beauty is a fundamental ingredient of human existence that nevertheless is subject to changing fashions. Around 1800, and against the backdrop of the Enlightenment and Romanticism, a new tradition arose that not only emphasised the experiential and sensory qualities of beauty but also accorded a moral and quasi-religious status to its experience. But whereas German Romanticism floundered under the pressures of the Biedermeier period, the British adoration of beauty developed into the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood , the Arts and Crafts Movement , or the Aestheticism of Oscar Wilde and his affiliated contemporaries. The intimate connection between beauty and British identity and the relative continuity of British culture then ensured that the concept of beauty retained some prominence throughout the 20th century. Echoes of the aforementioned movements permeate British culture, and their heritage was preserved at sites such as Kelmscott Manor or Buscot Park.
Today, however, beauty has become a contested concept. Social media and modern society demand increased standards of physical perfection, which are nevertheless criticised for replicating repressive structures of power. Art and architecture seem to have shifted their interests to other concerns, while war, pandemics and ecological as well as economic challenges suggest more pressing concerns than the fulfilment of our aesthetic needs.
Employing concepts of identity, class, gender and the body, this seminar will therefore look at the British cults and cultures of beauty in a national, intercultural and global context.
TV series and films to be examined are Brideshead Revisited (ITV, 1981), Wilde (Brian Gilbert, 1997), The Line of Beauty (BBC, 2006), Desperate Romantics (BBC, 2009), and An Education (Lone Scherfig, 2009). Extracts from theoretical works, literary texts and Liv Strömquist s 2021 graphic novel, Im Spiegelsaal/In the Hall of Mirrors, will be provided on the Virtual Campus, but students are expected to purchase/read the below literature.
