- In 2023 the Museum Georg Schäfer in Schweinfurt will stage an exhibition titled ‘Adolph Menzel and the German Shakespeare Euphoria of the Nineteenth Century’, and it will be running from 12 August until 22 October 2023.
Taking as its starting point the widespread enthusiasm for Shakespeare in nineteenth-century Germany, this seminar is devoted to Adolph Menzel’s works on Shakespeare. Along with Caspar David Friedrich Adolph Menzel (8 December 1815 – 9 February 1905) is considered one of the two most prominent German painters of the 19th century, and was the most successful artist of his era in Germany. Menzel’s Shakespeare works range from an early arabesque frame for a German and English Shakespeare edition, through numerous sketches of theatre productions that he attended in Berlin, to a portrayal of Hamlet and Polonius, a gouache painting of the dancing Henry VIII, and various portraits of the Bard.
Menzel’s artistic engagement with William Shakespeare will also be set in the specific cultural context of the German Shakespeare euphoria of the nineteenth century. This history will be brought to life through the particular example of the Deutsche Shakespeare-Gesellschaft and the ‘Meininger’, as illustrated above all in the work of the so-called ‘Theatre Duke’, Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen. The Duke not only substantially reformed the art of acting and made a name for himself with his numerous figurines and stage designs, but he also sent his court theatre on many guest performance tours, not least to the Friedrich-Wilhelmstädtische Theater (Friedrich Wilhelm City Theatre) in Berlin, where in May 1874 a production of Julius Caesar thrilled its Berlin audience. This particular production shaped the so-called ‘Meiningen’ style of staging from that point on.
N.B.: Students attending this seminar must be fluent in German and English. We will visit various museums and archives to do genuine research in the literary and theatre archives. The excursions are compulsory to receive ECTS.
