Für diese ausschlaggebend ist die Teilnahme an einem Test oder eines Vortrages oder eines Term papers. Dies ist abhängig von der Modulzugehörigkeit bzw. den ECTS-Punkten. Für die Einbringung im Consolidation Module I des Master-Studiengangs ist das Bestehen der mündlichen Modulprüfung am Ende des Semesters erforderlich.
Please inform the course teacher in good time (and certainly no later than 4 weeks after the start of the semester) if you wish to be awarded a grade for this seminar. The grade will be determined by a test, a presentation, or a term paper. This depends on the module taken and/or the ECTS points to be awarded.
If they wish this course to count towards their Consolidation Module I Master-Studiengang, students must pass an oral examination at the end of the semester.
- Inhalt
- In this seminar we will have a closer look at the job of an archivist as a possible career option for a student of British Culture. We will visit various archives in the area to learn more about the key duties of an archivist (e.g. evaluating, selecting, retrieving and arranging materials, answering queries, organising exhibitions etc.).
One of the workshops will be co-taught by Dr Oliver Walton. He will challenge ideas about what (cultural) historians do by giving an outline of the diverse ways in which the Royal Collection Trust and the Royal Archives work with history and culture. Dr Walton brings a unique perspective to bear as an historian working in the Royal Archives on a number of major projects which rely upon extensive partnership with other organisations. The Georgian Papers Programme ( https://georgianpapers.com ) and the Prince Albert project ( https://albert.rct.uk/ ) are large digitisation projects, while others are more traditional in nature.
During the seminar we will also explore the current landscape of higher education and the implications for the graduate job market in the UK, as well as the variety of career paths available within the British system. The main focus will be on exploring the projects in which the course convenors are involved, which will give an insight into the range of roles and activities involved in presenting historic documents to a wide range of audiences. This should enhance students understanding of both public history in practice, and the career opportunities that this understanding may present for them. We will also discuss the situation in Germany together with Horst Gehringer, Director of the Stadtarchiv in Bamberg.
You will need to take notes during the workshops, so please be prepared: pen and paper may be a good idea. However, the aim of the seminar is not that you take away pages and pages of notes, but that you take away lots of useful ideas and helpful experience. The workshop will be held in English and German. While explanations of particular points can be given in either language, you will need to have a reasonable level of comprehension in both.
