- Inhalt
- The time from the 1790s to the early 1830s, which is referred to as the Romantic period in British literary and art history, was not only a critical phase for the literary and cultural development, but also brought about important technological, economic, social and political changes. Apart from the Industrial Revolution, it was the overthrow of the political system across the Channel that provoked a heated discussion about the constitutional institutions, the legal system, the hierarchical order, the role of women, and the religious establishment in Britain. In the course of the “French Revolution Debate” ideological camps formed up, often referred to as the Jacobins and the anti-Jacobins or the conservatives and the radicals. The new literary movement that emerged sometimes engaged with the social and political realities and sometimes tried to avoid them by retreating into the realm of the imagination. In order to deepen an understanding of the historical, literary and cultural processes of the time, this practical course (Übung) analyses key texts ranging from the pamphlet to the religious tract and from the poem to the novel.
