Inhalt
The seminar introduces students to the field of Critical Heritage Studies. It focuses on heritage politics and policies and provides insights into the fundamental theoretical trends from heritage to class, gender, and ethics themes. These theories address heritage not as a given entity but as a social field in which the centrality of culture and its relation to identity is constantly influenced by different actors.

The course will introduce social identity theory which will help us better understand how particular social groups can value heritage to increase their feeling of belonging. It will also aid in exploring the role of policymaking regarding societal debates on belonging, pride and differences.

The seminar aims at understanding identity as a dialogue between individuals and society through learning, experiences, collective attitudes, and regulations which lead to identifying with certain in-groups or minorities according to the complex interplay of heritage, collective memory, nationalism, and history. In order to assess this complexity, the module explores the dynamics, debates, and manifestations of heritage and identity and its cultural impacts.

The participants will contribute to the content by analysing different theoretical approaches and relevant case studies. A particular focus in this field will be innovative approaches and processes that can also be used to discuss expert opinions and develop concepts within the seminar.

The first seminar session is dedicated to discussing the paper assignment and selecting presentation topics.
