Inhalt
Landscape archaeology is focused on understanding how people in the past shaped their surrounding and on the other hand how it shaped their lives, taking in account both physical as well as cultural aspects of their environments. During this seminar, theory and practice of landscape archaeology will be discussed. Firstly, we will focus on answering the question what is the landscape, how is it perceived, made and lived. We will address its role in society formation and power relations. Secondly, different theoretical strategies of engagement with ‘past’ landscapes will be debated. After an introduction to history of landscape archeology, we will concentrate on contemporary archaeological approaches to space and landscapes. Thirdly, different research strategies and methods (i.e. aerial photography, field walking, GIS, pollen analysis, cultural anthropology) associated with archaeological landscape studies will be addressed through analysis of various case studies.
