Course description
Part I (Dr. Bojana Plemic): Territory of the present day Serbia, during the period of the Roman Empire, included parts of the three provinces, Upper Moesia, Lower Pannonia and Dalmatia. Therefore, Serbia’s archaeological heritage from the period of the Roman domination is numerous in significant sites and in terms of portable archaeological material. After a brief review of historical circumstances as introduction to the epoch, such as the history of archaeological research and systematic protection of heritage in this ground, we will present the most important characteristics of the local Roman heritage, with special reference to the unique synthesis of Roman and autochthonous features. In further, course will represent the most significant Roman sites in Serbia, with particular emphasis on the processes of the conservation and presentation regarding a tourist valorization as the last stage of integrative protection of archaeological heritage. In the form of case studies we will highlight the examples based on modern methodology and new technologies usage, in accordance with good European practices. Also we are going to point at relevant problems which some archeological sites in Serbia are facing in the absence of systematic approach in the application of heritage protection mechanisms. Special attention will be given to the issues of nomination of the Roman heritage of Serbia on the UNESCO World Heritage List through the example of the Danube Limes Brand project.
