Inhalt
The lecture course “Exploring and Writing the History of Sexualities” gives an introduction to the history of sexualities from Antiquity to the 21st century. Far from being an anthropological constant, sexual behaviour and erotic desire have been perceived and classified along very different lines in different societies and cultures. Sexual acts that fall into the same category according to modern standards, have been attributed to different sides of the shifting borders of the illicit in the past. When analysing texts and representations describing sexual acts or desire from premodern or non-westerns contexts, we therefore must refrain from applying modern categories to the past, and we have to be equally careful to avoid using seemingly obvious arguments from the past in present debates. The course is designed as a lecture course, but ample opportunity for discussion and asking questions will be given. Students from all fields (especially history, languages and literature, pedagogy, psychology, religious studies of Christianity, Islam or Judaism) are welcome to attend.
