- Contemporary analytical metaphysics is a lively and fascinating subject, which has opened many surprising perspectives and brought about turns that have revolutionized many fixed points of modern philosophy. New essentialism is one such example. Reflections on the nature of language and on the logical structure of thinking have led contemporary analytical philosophers to retrieve and re-discuss an old, pre-modern philosophical stand: Essentialism. Contemporary debates, however, give a completely new twist to the old topic. Although this course does not require prerequisite knowledge, apart from an introductory logic course, it can be best followed by those students who already have a background in the philosophy of language, or those are taking one of the introductory courses on the philosophy of language offered this semester by prof. De Anna and by Mr Krebs. The position of Nathan Salmon will be extensively discussed and the course can thus be a useful preparation for the summer school on his work, which will take place at the end of the Semester. Literature will be in English, like most discussions. Final essays can be written either in German or in English.
- Empfohlene Literatur
- Book chapters and articles from recent debates on Essentialism will be suggested at the beginning of classes. An overview of the topics to be covered can be obtained from the books that have been reserved in the Semesterapparat.
