Inhalt
This course introduces students to the field of corpus linguistics, with a particular focus on lesser-studied languages. We will first discuss general ideas of corpus linguistics, including motivations for studying language through text corpora, variation in language use, types of text corpora and typical corpus-linguistic research questions. We then turn our attention to more research-practical aspects, in particular how to set up a research project based on existing corpora – including formulation of research questions, related corpus queries and quantitative analysis – and how to build corpora for more or less specific research projects, drawing in particular on language documentations from lesser-studied languages. The significance of text varieties, social factors of speakers, and modality, as well as questions of cross-language comparability and the role of small corpora in linguistic typology will be discussed. We will also consider the role of corpus linguistics in variantionist studies into language change and diversification.

Students will be expected to complete regular assignments and to devise their individual corpus-linguistic research projects on a topic of individual choice.
